Drinks For The Weekend And Still Lose Weight? OMG!

Before you grab that drink this weekend, read this.

1. Calories. For most people the calories in the mixers of their favorite cocktails pose a far greater barrier to weight loss than the healthy cocktailsactual alcohol. Just 4oz of some daiquiri or margarita mixes can contain upwards of 35 grams of sugar (that’s 7 teaspoons of sugar)! Plus, they’re more than double the amount of calories in the shot of rum or tequila included in the drink (that is, if you’re only served ½ cup of mixer). What’s worse, the calories from mixers are the worst kinds of calories, simple and refined sugars. When they’re combined with the metabolic effects of alcohol, it gets even worse.

2. Alcohol content. One myth about alcohol is that it will make you fat. But the truth is, it’s the combination of alcohol and sugars found in mixers (or the bar food often consumed with alcohol) that causes problems. Alcohol does contain calories, but it’s safe to assume that no one gains a lot of weight by throwing back shots of straight vodka. Instead, it is the metabolic priority that your body places on alcohol (over carbohydrates and fats) that causes the problem. Your body wants to process alcohol before anything else, which has been shown to create a metabolic environment that is almost the opposite of the environment your body creates following exercise—one of high circulating levels of fat and inhibited fat burning.

While this may sound all doom and gloom, there are upsides to drinking alcohol. Moderate alcohol consumption (1 drink per day for women) increases your HDL (‘good’) cholesterol, and studies show that people who have a couple drinks each week live longer. How can you get the best of both worlds?

1. When you drink, know your serving sizes. A glass of wine is not a full glass but 5oz (red wine glasses can hold 12-14oz).

2. Minimize the calories from mixers. Make margaritas with real lime juice, use diet tonic water, or even the naturally calorie-free club soda instead of regular tonic water and other high-calorie carbonated drinks.

3. If you are aggressively pursuing a weight-loss goal, corral any drinks to your splurge meals to reduce their impact on your overall fat burning.

A Natural Approach to Autumn Arthritis

As the autumn weather fast approaches, a lot of people will assert that they can feel the twinge in their joints. Whatever your age, a small ache now could become arthritis – or worse – down the road, so start taking care of your joints today. You don’t have to be one of the more than 40 million Americans who suffer from arthritis and joint pain. Take these tips to protect your joints well into the future.

Caring Curry
Curry, a staple spice combo in Southeast Asian cuisine, contains turmeric, the yellow spice that gives curry its distinctive color. The active component in turmeric is called curcumin. If you are a fan of curry, you will be happy to know that this substance is associated with anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties and has been associated with relief for joint pain. In one randomized control study, 107 patients with knee osteoarthritis received either 800 mg per day ibuprofen or 2 grams per day Curcuma domestica extract. Both groups showed improvement in pain during level walking and climbing stairs.

Helpful Herbal Therapy
The traditional Chinese remedy for back and joint pain is the herb eucommia, which strengthens bones, tendons and ligaments. A western study confirmed that both the leaves and the bark of eucommia contain a compound that encourages the development of collagen, an important part of connective tissues such as skin, tendons and ligaments.

Exciting Exercises
One of the best ways to protect your joints is regular exercise. Exercise circulates blood flow to your joints, stimulating the body’s regeneration mechanisms. Regular exercise also strengthens the muscles surrounding your joints, preventing them from rubbing against one another and wearing down cartilage. One more bonus: Exercise also helps you maintain your ideal body weight. The more you weigh, the more stress you are putting on your joints, especially your hips, back, knees and feet – so that is a major consideration.

Gentle on the joints, tai chi and qigong exercises improve overall flexibility and strengthen the joints. In my clinic, I teach a simple 30-minute daily practice called Eight Treasures qigong, which has been passed down through my family. It has been clinically shown to strengthen bones and joints and prevent arthritis. Best of all, it is far less stressful and strenuous than other types of physical exercise, and particularly emphasizes stretching and the strengthening of joints, tendons and muscles. Most licensed practitioners of Chinese medicine are able to teach some form of qigong and tai chi exercises, or you can learn from an instructional DVD.

Posture Perfect
You don’t have to walk around with a book on your head, but if you value your joints, do make an effort to stand up straight. Good posture protects the joints in your neck, back, hips and knees. Over time, gravity will make sure that slump shows up as joint problems.
Once you’re used to standing and sitting up straight, your muscles will feel an overall ease in stress because they won’t be in constant use to maintain an unsupported off-center body form. To get proper posture, pull your chin inward and pretend there is a string pulling straight up from the top of your head.

The following 3 part blog will take you through some of the most common SPRING FEVER OMG MOMENTS (Health, Weight, Stress) utilizing nothing but OMG strategies of how to Challenge, Conquer, Commit and Complete various elements each day to achieve the ultimate spring cleaning for a GREAT OMG SUMMER 2011 START!!! **Remember these are alternative suggestions provided by OMG and should not replace/conflict with medication. Please contact your doctor or and OMG specialist before starting if you have any concerns**

~ CHALLENGE: Ready for the outside and start enjoying this great spring weather- that is unless you suffer from springtime allergies and sinuses. Your immune system has decided that and everyday substances- maybe pollen from a tree, the dander from a cat or the dust on a book shelf- is your enemy, an allergen. When you inhale that substance into your body, an antibody is created. This specialized protein first detects the enemy, and then signals the immune system to disarm and destroy the scoundrel. If high pollen levels or other allergens are keeping you from enjoying the great outdoors, be prepared to make some OMG changes ASAP!

~CONQUER:   Two herbs that are great for aggravating allergies are Nettle and Ginkgo biloba. Nettle contains a substance that works as a natural anti-histamine and Ginkgo biloba contains substances called ginkgolides, which can stop allergy-triggering chemicals (platelet activating factor, PAF) in their tracks.

When addressing allergies, several important areas can be positively affected by utilizing essential oils, particularly lavender and bergamot, which can be used for their general notifying properties for allergy-related conditions. Most allergies involve inflammatory responses and will benefit from the anti-inflammatory essential oils such as chamomile and lavender. Lemon is one essential oil I often include with allergy remedies because it is purifying, anti-toxic and antibacterial. Essential oil use can strengthen your respiratory, immune, and nervous systems when used correctly, and in moderation.

Dietary recommendations include avoiding the foods which cause problems for you. Drink fresh lemon juice daily in water to purify and detoxify the body. Be sure to drink plenty of pure water too! Anti-oxidants may also help in prevention.

OMG TIP: To relieve itching, which is a common symptom in many allergies, use essential oils of lemon, chamomile and peppermint.

~COMMIT: Make sure your environment is allergy safe to avoid constant contact with the problem at hand. Here are a couple of house tips:  Non-carpeted flooring is best. If you can’t get rid of carpeting, vacuum often with a multi-layer, allergen-proof vacuum bag.  Buy plants such as Philodendrons, spider plants, cactus, English ivy and peace lilies to soak up air pollution and volatile toxins that may emitted throughout your home due to carpet, paint and even computers.

OMG TIP: For general use in many allergy situations, I recommend a blend of essential oils that can be diffused several times per day and can aid in controlling germs, purifying the air, promoting relaxation and are anti-inflammatory. This blend below is anti-toxic and anti-bacterial that should assist in soothing the nervous system.

For Diffuser use: 5 drops of Lavender essential oil, 2 drops of Bergamot essential oil, 1 drop of Lemon essential oil and 1 drop of Peppermint essential oil. Allow this essential blend to diffuse three to four times daily, for 10 to 15 minutes duration each time.

~COMPLETE: Visualize your immune system as a rain barrel. Many factors, such as infections, environmental toxins, and stress, can fill your barrel. When the barrel is full, one more drop-an allergen-can overflow your immune system so that it can’t deal with the invader. You experience allergic symptoms. The best ways to lower the water level in your rain barrel so that your body can deal with allergens is with detoxification baths. The heat from the bath releases stored toxins from fat cells into the blood. They then travel to the skin and are released. To make sure you keep this OMG MOMENT under control try our Spring Fever Steam Bath product ~ Horseradish and Shiitake extracts to enhance detoxification and stimulating bodily processes to relieve common allergy symptoms such as nasal congestion and dry eyes. It can be used as a facial steam bath, soak or footbath.

OMG TIP: Lymphatic Drainage is very important and helpful when involving respiratory ailments. The four basic principles of this method are:

  • Maintain normal body temperature (to remove or add heat)
  • Create a vacuum (to encourage drainage from glands or organs)
  • Reposition substance (movement of soft tissue)
  • Reposition congestion (to disperse internal fullness)

Below is a short an image to help you be aware of where your most prominent lymph nodes are that contribute to allergy and sinus symptoms.
