Is Hot Lemon Water Really The Best Morning Detox Drink?

hot lemon waterQ: Is it true that I should start the day with hot water with lemon? What’s the story behind this theory?

A: Like most health and fitness lore, the magic properties of drinking a juiced lemon in warm water each morning is rooted in a seed of truth, but the impact of the ritual is greatly overstated. Let’s look at the three main purported benefits and any evidence to support those claims.

1. Lemon improves digestion. Actually in some cases the fruit could exacerbate issues with your stomach: Citric acid in lemons can cause or contribute to stomach pains and cramps. So where does the idea that drinking lemon juice improves digestion come from? There is a study from about three decades ago that shows citric acid can improve absorption of aluminum hydroxide (the active ingredient in most antacids). I have read online that the acidic nature of lemon juice is supposed to support an optimal acidic environment in your stomach, but this is complete speculation and, as pointed out earlier, in certain individuals could have the opposite effect.

2. Lemon juice boosts mineral absorption. The vitamin C found in lemon juice has been shown to enhance mineral absorption, but you don’t need warm lemon juice to get this effect. Vitamin C is one of the most ubiquitous vitamins in fruits and vegetables. We often think of citrus fruits as being the major or even only source of C, but non-yellow and orange fruits and vegetables such as bell peppers, kale, strawberries, broccoli, and spinach all contain robust amounts of vitamin C. As long as you are having a fruit or vegetable with your morning meal, then you can expect to reap the enhanced absorption of minerals at that meal.

3. Lemon detoxes. One of the biggest health hypes about lemons and lemon juice is that they help detoxify your body. I recommend that you get very skeptical about any food or supplement claim regarding detoxification. It is such a general term that it is almost useless. The human body is so complex, what is getting detoxified? What are the toxins being removed? Where are they going?

Regarding lemon, there is an antioxidant in the fruit called d-limonene, which is also found in oranges and is most highly concentrated in the peels of lemons or oranges. D-limonene has been shown to activate enzymes in the liver that are part of the Phase 1 and Phase 2 detoxification processes. These processes take compounds present in the liver that are toxic to cells and convert them to non-harmful or less harmful versions. These “toxins” can range from caffeine to ibuprofen.

Does lemon juice contain enough D-limonene needed to enhance this process? Probably not. A liter of citrus juice (not made with the peels) contains on average 100 milligrams (mg) D-limonene. Researchers estimate the active dose of limonene is a minimum of 500mg. D-limonene is a fascinating compound that might also work to ease gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD), but doses would require supplementation.

As you can see, as a citrus fruit, lemon has a handful of characteristics and compounds that contribute to good health, but one lemon juiced in a glass of warm water probably isn’t going to do much for your health.

Capture This Cleanse to Release Loose Ends – Seasonal Beauty

Rain or shine, clear or smoggy, our bodies are profoundly affected by the rhythms and cycles of seasonal changes. As we metaphorically awaken from the slumber and hibernation of winter, we often realize that we have put on a few extra pounds.

Spring arrives, and after months of overindulging in heavy comfort foods, our clothes are fitting tighter, our anxiety is high and our energy levels are low. This prompts us into a desperate search for a way to drop weight instantly. Out of sheer panic, many opt for a trendy, over-the-counter liver or detoxification cleanse. In my experience, this has only caused me to abandon the mission halfway through or binge immediately afterward.

The danger of sudden or drastic shifts in diet is that they can actually toxins are released from the fat stores, they stream into our blood, and can cause nausea and headaches. For this reason, moderation and frequency are key components to success.

Now for the good news: The spring season brings lighter, crisper foods, which helps the body cleanse itself and shed the unwanted winter excess. However, it won’t happen overnight or all by itself.

The spring season symbolizes rebirth, life growth and purity. Let’s give our bodies the time and attention they deserve at this time of year, because when the seasons change, we change. Seasonal spring foods offer exactly what the body needs for  this season: fruits, sprouts and greens. Fruits with high water content hydrate the body, flush out the winter load and provide sugars as an energy source. Fresh, healthy greens and sprouts are high in vitamins and mineral, aid digestive function and are helpful in the weight loss process. They should be included in your diet on a daily basis.

Simple is better. Although the body naturally cleanses itself and eliminates waste through the skin, kidneys, respiratory system and gastrointestinal track, our bodies are bombarded with more artificial stimulants, pollution and chemicals than it is able to handle. These toxins accumulate. A moderate plan releases toxins at a slower rate. Any extensive or extreme detoxification program should be done under a doctor’s supervision.

Challenge yourself to a three-day do it yourself cleanse. This simplified detox is a great way to refocus and recommit to the goals and resolutions that you made at the beginning of the year. A week prior to cleansing, gradually reduce your intake of sugar and artificial sweeteners, white flour, dairy, alcohol, salt and caffeine, while increasing your intake of fresh fruits and vegetables. This prepares you for the change, both mentally and physically.

3-day cleanse

Upon rising: Drink 1 cup of hot water with lemon; sit in silence for 10 minutes.

Breakfast: Green smoothie: 2 handfuls of spinach, 1 banana, 1 apple cored, 1 tablespoon flaxseed oil and 16oz filtered water or 1 cup of oatmeal with almond or rice milk

Snack:  1 apple or pear and a handful of unsalted raw almonds

Lunch: 1 cup legumes; 1 cup brown rice or quinoa; 1 cup steamed chard kale or spinach

Snack: 2 apples or 1 cup of celery and carrot sticks with 2 tablespoons of hummus

Dinner: 1 cup of steamed beets with brown rice; 1 cup of steamed kale, chard, collard greens or spinach

Before bed: Drink 1 cup of hot lemon water

Drink plenty of water throughout the day. Begin and end the day with 1 teaspoon of psyllium powder mixed with 10oz water. This assists the elimination process.

Detoxifying the body targets the liver (where toxins and mood-altering hormones can build up) and the colon (which hold waste). it is very common to experience an increase in energy and improved digestion, both of which lead to healthier skin and a greater ability to focus.

Regularly doing a seasonal cleanse can help us follow a lifetime of healthier eating. Mark you calendar this spring and make a commitment to prepare your body for the new season.

Weekend Detox for that Special Day: 4th July Cookout Time!!!

COOKOUT TIME IS NEAR ~ out of town guests, food menu to prepare, house to clean…OMG MOMENT OVERLOAD. Don’t stress~we will help  you get over this issue and have you looking great doing it. You can improve your skin with a simple weekend detox—and it doesn’t involve fasting, purging, or a complete rearrangement of your life. There are some quick and easy methods like massages and facials that flush out waste and toxins. Follow our step-by-step routine and wake up Monday morning with a fresh, radiant complexion.

FRIDAY EVENING
Clear the clutter. Simply straightening up the junk on your coffee table or doing a load of laundry will prepare you for the inner cleansing to come.
Stock the fridge. During your weekend detox, you want to fill your body with healthy foods such as fresh fruits (cranberries, apples, and grapes) and vegetables (look for broccoli, carrots, and sweet potatoes)—their antioxidants help repair, and prevent, damage to your skin—and lean protein (chicken, turkey, and tofu). Avoid alcohol, tobacco, and all refined and processed foods.
Purge your products. When your skin acts up, the last thing you want to do is slather on various of concoctions and serums. The same goes for a detox. To give your skin time to rebalance, put away everything except your cleanser (Splash of Evny Herbal Wash), day lotion (OMG vs UV lotion), and night cream (OMGX3=NIGHT CREAM ).

SATURDAY MORNING
Drink warm tea.
Look for blends that include nettle, ginger, or burdock, dandelion, or sarsaparilla root—herbs and flowers known to calm inflammation and improve liver and kidney function. “These teas help eliminate puffiness around the eyes and decongest your skin. If you need a caffeine hit, try green tea: It has less of the stimulant and lots of antioxidants.

SATURDAY AFTERNOON
Give yourself a massage. “Encourage the elimination of waste by manually moving lymph through the lymphatic system. Concentrate on massaging the neck, armpits, stomach, groin, and behind the knees—areas where there are a lot of lymph nodes.

SATURDAY EVENING
Fake a facial at home. Pour hot water into a small bowl and add a few drops of a citrus essential oil. Soak a hand towel in the water, then wring out and drape over your face. Lie down for ten minutes and let the steam open your pores, prepping your skin for the detoxifying mask that follows. Look for masks made with clay, which absorbs excess oil and pulls toxins and impurities out, while adding in necessary minerals.

SUNDAY MORNING
Scrub your body.
Wake up your senses with a sloughing session in the shower. Exfoliate with a product that contains sunflower seed shells to remove dead, dulling skin cells, boost circulation, and pump toxins from the body (Sun-Tower Scrub).

SUNDAY AFTERNOON
Sweat it out. Light exercise—a brisk walk, jumping rope, yoga—helps eliminate toxins from your body. The deep breathing of yoga stimulates the lymphatic system. It also brings cleansing oxygen into the body with each inhale, and expels waste on each exhale. Try sun salutations, which nurture as well as detoxify, or twisting poses to activate the digestive system.

SUNDAY EVENING
Apply a mask. At the end of your detox, you’ll want to nourish and calm your complexion. Spread a few tablespoons of raw honey over your face. Next, apply cucumber slices on top of the honey then lie down. Cover your face with a warm, damp washcloth to allow the honey, a natural humectant, to seal in moisture. Honey’s anti–inflammatory properties also help reduce irritation and redness. Cucumbers, which act as diuretics, will further flush out excess fluid and relieve any remaining puffiness. Or to go OMG style try our Beta-Like-Avocado Masque which contains carrot powder, great for vitamin and mineral absorption as well as promotes cell rejuvenation.

We at OMG want you to learn how to detoxify – to remove all those chemicals that have accumulated in your fluids and tissues – and let your body begin to regenerate itself through fitness, nutrition and health! OMG~did you know strong healthy cells are what makes your foundation grounded? The key  lies in the foods you put in your mouth, the thoughts you put in your head and the feeling you place in your heart.  As you begin to observe how you feel when you improve your diet, control your thoughts and foster peaceful feeling, you will know what to do and what not to do.

The following 3 part blog will take you through some of the most common SPRING FEVER OMG MOMENTS (Health, Weight, Stress) utilizing nothing but OMG strategies of how to Challenge, Conquer, Commit and Complete various elements each day to achieve the ultimate spring cleaning for a GREAT OMG SUMMER 2011 START!!! **Remember these are alternative suggestions provided by OMG and should not replace/conflict with medication. Please contact your doctor or and OMG specialist before starting if you have any concerns**

~ CHALLENGE: Ready for the outside and start enjoying this great spring weather- that is unless you suffer from springtime allergies and sinuses. Your immune system has decided that and everyday substances- maybe pollen from a tree, the dander from a cat or the dust on a book shelf- is your enemy, an allergen. When you inhale that substance into your body, an antibody is created. This specialized protein first detects the enemy, and then signals the immune system to disarm and destroy the scoundrel. If high pollen levels or other allergens are keeping you from enjoying the great outdoors, be prepared to make some OMG changes ASAP!

~CONQUER:   Two herbs that are great for aggravating allergies are Nettle and Ginkgo biloba. Nettle contains a substance that works as a natural anti-histamine and Ginkgo biloba contains substances called ginkgolides, which can stop allergy-triggering chemicals (platelet activating factor, PAF) in their tracks.

When addressing allergies, several important areas can be positively affected by utilizing essential oils, particularly lavender and bergamot, which can be used for their general notifying properties for allergy-related conditions. Most allergies involve inflammatory responses and will benefit from the anti-inflammatory essential oils such as chamomile and lavender. Lemon is one essential oil I often include with allergy remedies because it is purifying, anti-toxic and antibacterial. Essential oil use can strengthen your respiratory, immune, and nervous systems when used correctly, and in moderation.

Dietary recommendations include avoiding the foods which cause problems for you. Drink fresh lemon juice daily in water to purify and detoxify the body. Be sure to drink plenty of pure water too! Anti-oxidants may also help in prevention.

OMG TIP: To relieve itching, which is a common symptom in many allergies, use essential oils of lemon, chamomile and peppermint.

~COMMIT: Make sure your environment is allergy safe to avoid constant contact with the problem at hand. Here are a couple of house tips:  Non-carpeted flooring is best. If you can’t get rid of carpeting, vacuum often with a multi-layer, allergen-proof vacuum bag.  Buy plants such as Philodendrons, spider plants, cactus, English ivy and peace lilies to soak up air pollution and volatile toxins that may emitted throughout your home due to carpet, paint and even computers.

OMG TIP: For general use in many allergy situations, I recommend a blend of essential oils that can be diffused several times per day and can aid in controlling germs, purifying the air, promoting relaxation and are anti-inflammatory. This blend below is anti-toxic and anti-bacterial that should assist in soothing the nervous system.

For Diffuser use: 5 drops of Lavender essential oil, 2 drops of Bergamot essential oil, 1 drop of Lemon essential oil and 1 drop of Peppermint essential oil. Allow this essential blend to diffuse three to four times daily, for 10 to 15 minutes duration each time.

~COMPLETE: Visualize your immune system as a rain barrel. Many factors, such as infections, environmental toxins, and stress, can fill your barrel. When the barrel is full, one more drop-an allergen-can overflow your immune system so that it can’t deal with the invader. You experience allergic symptoms. The best ways to lower the water level in your rain barrel so that your body can deal with allergens is with detoxification baths. The heat from the bath releases stored toxins from fat cells into the blood. They then travel to the skin and are released. To make sure you keep this OMG MOMENT under control try our Spring Fever Steam Bath product ~ Horseradish and Shiitake extracts to enhance detoxification and stimulating bodily processes to relieve common allergy symptoms such as nasal congestion and dry eyes. It can be used as a facial steam bath, soak or footbath.

OMG TIP: Lymphatic Drainage is very important and helpful when involving respiratory ailments. The four basic principles of this method are:

  • Maintain normal body temperature (to remove or add heat)
  • Create a vacuum (to encourage drainage from glands or organs)
  • Reposition substance (movement of soft tissue)
  • Reposition congestion (to disperse internal fullness)

Below is a short an image to help you be aware of where your most prominent lymph nodes are that contribute to allergy and sinus symptoms.

OMG is so happy to jumpstart your 2011 Spring Cleaning process. Stay tuned for Part 2 next week: Detox Plans, Healthy Recipes and Fitness Tips to help you put your weight loss goal or overall health at the top of the OMG STATUS. Remember OhMyGosh is where OMG MOMENTS BECOME OMG HISTORY!
